45 days and I leave for the U.S. - rather excited now, starting to buy bits and pieces and get myself organised. I am a master of lists! No doubt this trip will push me in all kinds of new ways, and I am really looking forward to seeing who I am when I come out the other side of it. I suspect I will be quite changed.
I was looking for tips for the flight the other day, came across this blog article that made me chuckle. Extra bonus? Vomit bag anecdotes. LOL! I have stocked up on books (I have The Alchemy of Loss, The Time of My Life and Notes Left Behind as well as a chicklit novel), and will ensure I have writing materials with me. Mostly, I am hoping to sleep.
Given it is the first major trip I have done, I am more than welcoming travel tips and packing essentials, let me know yours.

Get a neck pillow. Little u shaped pillow that wraps around your neck. Makes sleeping on an airplane so much easier.
Also before we left for San Fran we stayed up the day or so before hand, so by the time we got on the flight we'd been awake for 36 hours and just passed out on the plane. Which I'm so glad about because I'm so impatient when it comes to traveling.
If I think of any more I'll let you know.
Yay!
Hi Kell, I'm over from Fat Mum Slim - I loved your responses. :) My best travel tip is to pack clothes in a similar colour palette so everything matches - ie. black, white and whatever your favourite other colour is and some accessorise with scarves/necklaces etc too - these take up less room for the important things you'll come home with! :) Avoid jeans if you can (I always try but never do) cos they take forever to dry and finding a laundromat is the last thing you want to do when travelling (and is boring as bats***!). Happy planning - I love planning for a trip. xo
I second the neck pillow. Earplugs are also a must to block out the plane noise.
Great tips, thank you. Am pretty organised. More than slightly impatient though...
Keep on posting such articles. I like to read articles like that. By the way add some pics :)
So excited for you! It has been a VERY long time since I've had to comtemplate a flight that long. I tend to bring about 50 pounds of crap with me. Books. Knitting. All of my camera equipment and my laptop, because god knows there is NO WAY I'm checking that stuff. Crosswords and sudoku and music and snacks. And and and and...
I never end up touching half of it, but at least I don't have to worry about being bored. :)
I second everything Leila said! I end up running around organising stuff like a headless chicken the night before I leave and am shattered by the time I hop on the plane.
My tips:
Don't drink caffeine or alcohol on the plane - I take my own tea-bags - jasmine, or camomile tea, and ask for a cup of hot water. Smells so good!
Ear plugs, neck pillow and eye mask - plan when you are going to sleep, hopefully at night-time in your destination.
Don't take so much on the plane! Every time I travel I take less. 1 book, 1 killer sudoku, ipod, pencil (plus neck pillow, ear plugs etc.)
Wear comfortable clothes on the plane! I take a strappy top or something to sleep in (plus the blanket) and save the outer layers to be fresh when you wake up.
Have fun once you are there! Don't feel bad if one day you don't want to be a tourist, and find a nice place to sit and read a book! I have read books on park benches and cafes around the place when I lose my let's-look-at-everything mojo :D
